Sao Tome Govt. Toppled in Coup

The government of Sao Tome and Principe was overthrown in a military coup early Wednesday, Portuguese news agency Lusa reported.

The government of Sao Tome and Principe was overthrown in a military coup early Wednesday, Portuguese news agency Lusa reported.

Lusa said Prime Minister Maria das Neves and the minister of defense were detained in the coup.

The military have also captured the country's radio and television stations, which have both stopped transmission, Lusa said.

Sao Tome President Fradique Bandeira de Menezes is currently in Nigeria on a private visit.

Sao Tome has a population of about 120,000 and comprises several small islands off the coast of West Africa.
