China produced 903,400 sedans in the first half of the year, a rise of 100 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the State Statistical Bureau.

Statistics show in June, China produced 179,200 sedans, breaking the monthly sedan production record for the fourth time this year.

Sedans constitute a growing portion of the overall auto manufacturing industry.

In 2002, sedan production accounted for 33.6 percent of total auto production.

In the first five months of this year, the percentage grew to 41 percent, and in June alone, it topped 50 percent.

According to experts, sedan manufacturing has become one of the driving forces of China's auto industry.

The national auto industry began recovering in June from the slump caused by the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in April and May.

Auto output in June was 31.8 percent up year-on-year.
