Auto Makers Urged to Turn China into Industry Giant

Chinese auto makers were instructed Wednesday to work hard for two decades to make China not only a major manufacturing base by output but to turn the country into a real automotive industry giant.

Chinese auto makers were instructed Wednesday to work hard for two decades to make China not only a major manufacturing base by output but to turn the country into a real automotive industry giant.

The call was made by Zhang Xiaoyu, deputy head of the China Federation of Machinery Industry, at a forum of the Third Changchun International Automobile Fair that opened Tuesday in Changchun, the capital of northeast China's Jilin Province.

To become competitive in the automotive industry, China must attain four goals, Zhang said. It must be capable of innovating and developing products independently, establish a solid industrial foundation for automobile spare parts, have a sound marketing service network and be supported by related industries.

Zhang predicted a 5 percent growth in China's automotive industry. By 2020, the country will be able to produce over 10 million automobiles and China-made automobiles will make up one sixth of the world's automobile market.

The country's production goal for this year is over four million automobiles.

Changchun is considered a major base of China's auto industry. The international automobile fair is a biennial event, and was first held in 1999.

The fair will close next Tuesday.
