Yunnan, Taiwan to Increase Economic Cooperation

Southwest China's Yunnan Province and the island province of Taiwan have great potential for economic cooperation, and Yunan will strengthen its ties with Taiwain in this regard, a senior official of Yunan said Thursday.

Shao Qiwei, vice governor of Yunnan, said that the two regions have conducted successful cooperation in flowers, sugar and other sectors and that he hoped this trend would continue.

Shao made the remarks at a forum on cross-Straits relations that opened Thursday in the scenic spot of Lijiang in the northwestern part of Yunan.

Over the past years, the number of tourists from Taiwan to Yunan have been on a constant rise, and last year, the number reached nearly 400,000.

To date, 449 Taiwan businesses have been set up in Yunan, involving direct investment of 287 million US dollars.

Shao said Yunnan is rich in natural resources while Taiwan is comparatively more advanced in technology, and therefore, cooperation between the two provinces would benefit both.
