China's Senior Party Official Arrives in Auckland

Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, arrived here Thursday for an official goodwill visit at the invitation of the government of NewZealand.

Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, arrived here Thursday for an official goodwill visit at the invitation of the government of NewZealand.

Upon arrival at the airport, Li said in a written statement that China attaches great importance to its friendly cooperative ties with New Zealand and is ready to work together with the country to give a new impetus to bilateral ties in line with the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

During his visit, Li will exchange views with leaders of New Zealand on the two countries' ties and major international and regional issues of common concern, and learn from the valuable experiences of New Zealand in its construction.

Since they forged diplomatic ties in 1972, the two countries have made steady progress in their ties, he said, adding that China is happy to see the increasing exchanges and cooperation in economy, trade, science, technology, culture and education in recent years between the two countries.

The two sides have also strengthened their consultations on major international and regional issues, Li said, noting that the development of bilateral ties has gained momentum.

Citing China and New Zealand as important Asia-Pacific nations,Li said the overall advancement of bilateral ties not only conforms to the aspirations and interests of the two peoples, but is also conducive to peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

Jonathan Lucas Hunt, speaker of the House of Representatives ofNew Zealand, went to the airport to greet Li.

Li came here after a stopover in Papeete, French Polynesia. NewZealand is the last leg of Li's three-country tour, which also took him to Cuba and Argentina.
