A deal to build the first domestic garbage recycling plant using biotechnology in western China has been signed in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, north China.

According to the agreement signed between Shanghai-based Meishang Environmental Protection Co. and Hohhot city government, the plant will have a daily processing capacity of 600 tons of domestic trash using biotechnology.

Guo Rongzong, board chairman of the Meishang International Group Limited, which owns the Shanghai company, said the project is designed to cost 120 million yuan (14.6 million US dollars).

The 10-ha plant, whose construction is anticipated to begin later this month, will be ready for operation on a trial basis a year later.

Guo said the project will recycle usable resources in at least 90 percent of the garbage, and turn some of the remainders into fertilizer with the help of microbes.

Wang Gang, deputy-mayor of Hohhot, said the city produces 1,400tons of domestic garbage per day, which currently is subjected to land-filling after proper treatment.

The deal will enable the city to commercialize the processing of its domestic trash, save the land used for burying the processed trash, and improve the environment in garbage processingareas.
