Tight Security for Independence Day Celebrations in Bogota

More than 15,000 police agents and soldiers will be deployed in Bogota on Sunday for celebrations to mark the 193rd anniversary of Colombia's Independence Day.

More than 15,000 police agents and soldiers will be deployed in Bogota on Sunday for celebrations to mark the 193rd anniversary of Colombia's Independence Day.

"Every available agent is working to guarantee security during the military parade and the meeting of Congress," Bogota Police Commander Daniel Castro said Friday.

Army and police forces with 450 sniffer dogs have been deployed all over the country to search for explosives and drugs.

Police and security agents have made dozens of swoops in the past week to track down weapons, explosives, as well as guerrillaswho might launch terrorist attacks.

On Sunday, President Alvaro Uribe is scheduled to attend the military parade in central Bogota, open the ordinary sessions of Congress and deliver his first State of the Union speech.
