The United Nations Security Council on Friday approved UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's proposal to end the peacekeeping operation in Sierra Leone by December 2004.

Under resolution 1492 adopted unanimously, the 12,000-strong UNpeacekeeping mission (UNAMSIL) would start a four-stage drawdown next month.

But the resolution recognized that in view of the fragile security situation in Africa's Mano River region, particularly theconflict in Liberia, the capacity of Sierra Leone's police and armed forces needs to be strengthened further so that they can maintain security and stability independently.

The 15-nation body also welcomed Annan's intention to submit additional recommendations in early 2004 regarding a residual UN presence in Sierra Leone.

UNAMSIL was created in October 1999 to help the Sierra Leone government and the rebel United Revolutionary Front (RUF) implement a peace agreement.

The 11-year-long bloody conflict in Sierra Leone, which ended in July 2002, claimed up to 200,000 lives.
