Urumqi Trade Fair to Open in September

The 2003 Urumqi Trade Fair is to be held in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, from September 1-8.

The 2003 Urumqi Trade Fair is to be held in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, from September 1-8.

Ismail Tiliwaldi, the chairman of the regional government, saidat Friday's press conference in Beijing that 900 companies and 50,000 domestic and overseas business people were expected to participate in the annual event.

The first Urumqi Trade Fair was held in 1992 and since then morethan 27,000 overseas business people from 73 foreign countries andregions have attended the fair.

The past 11 fairs witnessed the signing of foreign trade contracts worth 15.97 billion US dollars and a domestic trade of 131.6 billion yuan (about 15.86 billion US dollars).

The Urumqi Trade Fair is one of the major international business gatherings in China. In May, the organizer opened a special website, www.urumqifair.com, to promote business relationsand exchanges between Chinese companies and their foreign counterparts.

Zhang Zhou, vice chairman of the regional government, said there would also be a high-level forum on trade and economic cooperation in central and western Asia, the first of its kind to be held in Urumqi.
