Explosives were used Sunday afternoon to clear the Qinggan River, in Zigui County of central China's Hubei Province, after a landslide blocked the river a week ago.

The landslide crashed into the Qinggan River, a tributary of the Yangtze, early last Sunday morning near remote Qianjiangping Village, leaving 24 people dead or missing and completely blockingthe river.

Rescuers are still searching for people missing in the landslide.

Efforts were made to dig a trench through the mud and rock to allow the river to flow, but the water-level in the river rose rapidly due to heavy rainfall.

It was decided to use explosives to clear the blockage.

The explosion cleared 3,360 cubic meters of mud and rock, speeding the flow of the river and reducing the risk of flooding in the lower reaches.
