Jordan's Cabinet resigned Sunday and King Abdullah II directed the prime minister to form a new one, the official Petra news agency reported.

A government official who declined to be identified told The Associated Press that several ministers would retain their portfolios, including Foreign Minister Marwan Muasher -- an indication that Jordan's foreign policy will remain unchanged.

The Cabinet's mandate ran out June 17, when it supervised parliamentary elections, the first in six years. The new Cabinet is expected to be sworn in Monday or Tuesday.

Jordan's parliament convened last week for the first time since Abdullah dissolved the previous legislature in June 2001.

The king's loyalists won 62 seats in the 110-member Chamber of Deputies during last month's vote. Muslim fundamentalists and their sympathizers took 24 seats to become the largest opposition block.

Prime Minister Ali Abul-Ragheb, whom the king decided to retain, has reshuffled the Cabinet five times since first taking office three years ago.
