Van den Hoogenband Beats Thorpe in Swimming Worlds' Heats

The first duel between Australian Ian Thorpe and Dutchmen Pieter van den Hoogenband in the 200-meter freestyle at the 10th FINA World Championships, wentto the latter Monday morning.

The first duel between Australian Ian Thorpe and Dutchmen Pieter van den Hoogenband in the 200-meter freestyle at the 10th FINA World Championships, wentto the latter Monday morning.

Van den Hoogenband clocked a best heats' time of one minute 47.21 seconds, whereas the Australian finished with 1:47.99.

The third best finished in the prelims was Czech Kvetoslav Svoboda, who came in more than two seconds after the Dutch and theAustralian, in 1:49.30.

Italian Emiliano Brembilla, sixth best in the world this year, did not take part in the event.

Spanish Olaf Wildeboer qualified for the semi-finals Monday afternoon after coming in eleventh with 1:50.06.

In the second men's event Monday morning, the 100m backstroke, Australian Matt Welsh endorsed his clear leadership in the world this year and got the best ever time of 44.59.

Russian Arkady Vytchanin ranked second in 54.81. Aaron Peirsolof the United States came in third in 54.99.
