Welsh Breaks Men's 50m Butterfly World Record
Australian Mathew Welsh broke the men's 50m butterfly world record, clocking in 23.43 seconds atthe world swimming championships Monday.

n Matthew Welsh won themen's 50m butterfly in a new world record time of 23.43 seconds atthe 10th FINA World Championships here on Monday.
His compatriot Geoff Huegill set the previous world mark of 23.44 in the last world championships in Fukuoka,
Japan
, two years ago. The the defending champion finished fourth in 23.76.
Welsh was followed by Ian Crocker of the
United States
in 23.62and
Russia
n Ebgueni Korotychkine in 23.73.
And the new record by Welsh initiated a string of new world records and championships marks on the ninth day of the champinships.
Auastralian Leisel Jones set a new world record of one minute 6.37 seconds, in women's 100m breaststroke semi-finals. The previous mark of 1:06.52 was set by
South Africa
n Penelope Heyns in 1999.
Japan's Kosuke Kitajima, Asian Games champion last year in Busan, South Korea, set a new world record of 59.78 seconds on wayto the men's 100m breaststroke gold.
His victory and the third world mark of the day was followed byBrendan Hansen of the United States in 1:00.21 and Briton James Gibson in 1:00.37
Russia's Roman Sloudnov, defending champion and holder of the previous world mark of 59.94 seconds, failed to qualify for the world championships through the national trials.
Ukraine's Yana Klochkova took the women's 200m individual medley in a championships record time of two minutes 10.75 seconds.
Australian Alice Mills followed in 2:12.75 and China's Zhou Yafei, Asian Games silver-medalist last year, finished third in 2:12.92.
China's Asian Games champion Qi Hui finished fourth in 2:14.51.
American Jenny Thompson set a new championships record of 58.14in women's 100m butterfly in the heats, which was broken by MatinaMoravcova of Slovakia who clocked a new time of 58.05.
Thompson renewed the mark with a 57.99 before sealing it as 57.96 in the final.
American Aaron Peirsol set a championships record in men's 100mbreaststroke in the semi-finals. Japanese Kosuke Kitajima improved it with a world record time of 59.78 in the final.
