A huge landslide has caused traffic block in the only major highway linking Sichuan Province and Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China.

Over the past three days, the giant landslide caused by continuous torrential rains swept across the Polonggou part of the highway, destroying one major bridge while mud and rocks piling upon a nearly 20 km-long road.

Song Wangui, chief of Tibet regional highway bureau, said that some 150 motor vehicles have been blocked on the highway, which is expected to remain close until the end of the month.

At press time, more than 200 personnel from the armed police and local transportation authorities are busily engaged in repairing the road.
