A pair of infant Korean sisters connected at the lower back underwent separation surgery Tuesday at Singapore's Raffles Hospital despite the hospital's recent failed attempt to separate a pair of conjoined Iranian twins.

The 4-month-old Korean twins Sa Rang and Ji Hye went into surgery at 2 a.m. EDT, a spokeswoman with Raffles Hospital said on condition of anonymity. She provided no more details, but said the hospital would hold a press conference later in the day.

Local News Radio 93.8 said the operation could last eight to 10 hours.

The Straits Times newspaper reported Tuesday that the twins' father, Min Seong-Joon, was told by surgeons his daughters had an 85 percent chance of survival.

The procedure comes just two weeks after a team of surgeons from Raffles Hospital failed to separate Ladan and Laleh Bijani, Iranian twins born joined at the head. The 29-year-old sisters died in the operating room 90 minutes apart from massive blood loss.

The Bijani sisters had met with the family of the infant Korean twins in June and encouraged them to go ahead with the surgery, the Straits Times said.

The Korean twins are the third set of conjoined twins to undergo risky separation surgery here in two years.

Surgeons led by pediatric surgeon Dr. Keith Goh separated two 18-month-old Nepalese twins who were joined at the head in November 2001.
