The Tokyo High Court on Tuesday rejected a damages suit filed by wartime sex slaves and Korean civilian personnel, Kyodo News reported.

But the court ruled that the Japanese government failed to fulfill its obligation to provide security for several plaintiffs.

The 35 plaintiffs, including bereaved family members, sought 20 million yen in compensation each from the Japanese government for their wartime sufferings due to the former Japanese Imperial Army.

The court said the government at the time had an obligation to protect the euphemistically termed "comfort women" from danger, but ruled nonetheless that their right to demand compensation had already expired.

The plaintiffs said they will appeal against the ruling to the Supreme Court, according to Kyodo.
