Doctors at Singapore's Raffles Hospital have finished separating a pair of four-month-old Korean twin sisters conjoined at the lower spine, said the hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

"The operation started at 1 PM (GMT 0500)," said a Raffles Hospital Spokeswoman without giving other details of the separation surgery.

Medical experts earlier said the chances of successfully separating the conjoined twins, Min Sa-rang and her sister Ji-hye are deemed to be higher than those of the conjoined Iranian twin sisters Ladan and Laleh Bijani, who died in an attempt to separatethem in early July.

The four-month-old twin sisters, who are conjoined at the lowerspine, were born on March 3, Channnelnewsasia.

The twin sisters "have never really seen each other face to face" since they were born, said the English language TV station, and they can only lie down on one side.

Some organs in the lower part of their bodies are also extremely close together, it said.
