China is an "irreplaceable trade partner" of the European Union (EU), and Belgium is willing to cooperate to build international multi-polar political and economic orders, said Belgian Ambassador to China Gaston van Duyse-Adam here on Wednesday.

Van Duyse, head of the Belgian delegation, is in Dalian to attend the fifth ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Economic Ministers' Meeting (EMM).

Although China was still facing some challenges, such as banking problems, "I have full confidence in China's economic prospects," said the ambassador.

The SARS epidemic had only a temporary impact on the Chinese economy and would not affect its economic structures and capability to absorb investment, Van Duyse said.

China's victory over the SARS disease again proved that the Chinese government and people could overcome any possible difficulties, he said.

Referring to Sino-Belgian economic ties, he said Belgium had increased its investment in China's western regions in the past few years, aimed at cutting the development gap between China's coastal and rural areas.

As one of the founding members of the EU, Belgium would continue to commit itself to boosting cooperation with China in the fields of trade, education and medicine production, Van Duyse added.

He also called for intensified dialogue to eliminate extremism and stamp out the root causes of terrorism.
