A leader of Islamic resistance movement Hamas said Thursday the movement's choice is to continue armed attacks against Israel to defend their land and get their rights.

Nizar Rayan, a prominent Hamas leader from Jabalya refugee camp, made the remarks in a rally in the northern Gaza Strip village of Beit Hanoon to commemorate the first anniversary of the assassination of Sheikh Salah Shehada.

Shehada, the founder and leader of the movement's armed wing Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, had been wanted by Israel for being behind dozens of suicide bombing attacks that killed hundreds of Israelis. He was killed in one of Gaza City's neighborhoods when an Israeli F16 warplane attacked a building.

About 5,000 Palestinian supporters of Hamas participated in the rally, waving pictures of Shehada with "we would never forget the brave commander" written on them.

Rayan, whose son was a Hamas militant and killed in an armed attack in Gaza during the Intifada (uprising), told reporters that people came to the rally to make it clear that resistance is the only choice remained in the hands of the Palestinians.

"The Palestinian people would continue defending themselves and their lands that the Jewish state is trying to take after destroying it," said Rayan, "This rally was made to reaffirm that the people here would follow Shehada until their lands are liberated.

"We are still sticking to Hudna (ceasefire), but Israel continues its attacks on the Palestinians," he said.

"The continuation of the Israeli attacks and the Israeli denial to release Palestinian prisoners from its jails would undermine the Hudna agreement," he added.

Wearing military uniforms and putting black masks on their faces, dozens of kids paraded and made military shows in the rally, amid shouts of the crowds calling for resuming armed attacks against Israel.
