China has successfully finished a geological survey for Kalium resources in the Vientiane Plain of Laos, the largest of its kind carried out by the country overseas.

The project, implemented by the Yunnan Geology and Mineral Resources Exploitation Group Company, has been jointly approved bythe Chinese and Lao governments and co-funded by China's Ministries of Finance and Land Resources, the former State Development Planning Commission and the company.

In March 2000, the company detected a rich Kalium reserve allowing an initial exploitation of 100 million tons and a maximumpossible reserve of 10 billion tons from a land area of 1,970 square kilometers.

Kalium has always been in large demand in China because it is an important raw material for potassium chloride, used in the production of agricultural fertilizers.

Official statistics revealed that the country's annual production of potassium chloride totaled only 450,000 tons while the annual market demand is as much as 6 million tons.

Many Chinese enterprises, mostly in Yunnan, have expressed their intent to cooperate with the company to fully exploit Kaliumin Laos.
