Car Imports Surge in China's Biggest City

Car imports through China's top industrial center jumped 70 percent in the first half of 2003 overthe same period last year.

Car imports through China's top industrial center jumped 70 percent in the first half of 2003 overthe same period last year.

Figures from Shanghai customs indicated that in the first six months, the number of cars imported averaged 36 on a daily basis, worth 232 million US dollars, a rise of 130 percent over last year.

Of the 6,520 cars imported, 2,812 were made in Germany and 2,261 in Japan, up 120 percent and 17.7 percent, respectively.

Brand names such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota, accounted for the bulk of the imports, according to the figures.
