SARS Reduces Farmers' Cash Income in China

The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in parts of China has substantially cut the cash income of farmers, the National Statistics Bureau said over the weekend.

The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in parts of China has substantially cut the cash income of farmers, the National Statistics Bureau said over the weekend.

In the second quarter of the year, farmers sustained a 26.5-percent drop in cash income year on year as many businesses using rural laborers were suspended due to the SARS outbreak.

They also had a 15.3-percent loss in income from business in the secondary and tertiary service industries, according to a sample survey the bureau conducted among 68,000 farmer households in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities around the country.

The bureau estimated a per capita loss of 35 yuan (4.2 US dollars) in cash income for farmers around the country in the second quarter of the year.

A a result, farmers' per capita cash income for the first half of this year stood at 1,158 yuan (140 dollars), up 3.2 percent year on year, but the growth rate was 3.4 percentage points lower from a year earlier.
