Police have arrested a 19-year-old university student in Beijing who threatened to bomb a supermarket, a spokesman with the Beijing Public Security Bureau Haidian Branch said Saturday.

On July 22, nine letters were found in a residential area of Haidian District, threatening to bomb a local supermarket.

The police arrested the suspect surnamed Li at his home two days later and allegedly discovered the original copy of the letter in Li's personal computer.

Li allegedly confessed that he rode his bicycle to the area on the night of July 21 and posted up nine letters. He is claimed to have told police the threat was intended to draw public attention to the supermarket, which he said had bullied customers.

He said he only wanted to vent his dissatisfaction with the supermarket, and had never really intended to carry out the bombing.

Police said Li was reserved in character and had few friends. His main hobby was to surf the Internet.
