S. China Province Exports More Furniture in First Half This Year

South China's Guangdong Province exported 420 million pieces of furniture in the first half of this year, a rise of 16.9 percent over the same period last year, according to statistics from local customs.

South China's Guangdong Province exported 420 million pieces of furniture in the first half of this year, a rise of 16.9 percent over the same period last year, according to statistics from local customs.

The exports were valued at 1.55 billion US dollars, up 20.5 percent year on year.

The province is one of the country's leading furniture manufacturers and exporters, accounting for 47.9 percent of the country's total furniture exports in 2002.

The United States, Hong Kong and the European Union were the major markets. Furniture exports to the United States stood at 790 million US dollars in the first six months, up 20.5 percent year on year, or 51 percent of the province's total exports in the period.

Export to EU countries rose by 52.4 percent to 190 million US dollars.
