Fu Tieshan, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC),met with Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, the Catholic Archbishop of Washington, the United States, here Monday.

Fu, also chairman of Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association and bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Beijing, said Hong Kong religious leaders, including Catholic leaders, had told him that the behavior of several Catholic clergymen in Hong Kong had influenced social stability and harmed the image of Catholicism in Hong Kong.

Fu said he, as a Chinese Catholic bishop, was concerned about what happened in Hong Kong and did not expect to see improper behavior make it more complicated to improve the relations between China and the Vatican.

McCarrick said he agreed with Fu on making more efforts to improve the bilateral ties between the Vatican and China.
