Bush Says US Economy Showing Fresh Signs of Improvement

US President George W. Bush said Monday that the US economy is showing fresh signs of improvement and called on the US Congress to approve legislations to help low-income Americans.

US President George W. Bush said Monday that the US economy is showing fresh signs of improvement and called on the US Congress to approve legislations to help low-income Americans.

"Greater opportunity and hope begins with a growing economy," President Bush told a conference of the National Urban League in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Making a rare appearance before a group that represents black Americans, he said, "A lot of economists are beginning to forecast a better tomorrow" and "I'm optimistic about the future."

The US president noted that the economy has been sluggish sincehe took office but government reports in recent days have showed that the tide may be turning, citing encouraging recent figures onhome sales and retail sales.

He also called the US Congress to pass legislations to improve job training opportunities and to extend tax-reduction measures tothe working poor in the country.
