Col. Gen. Valery Belayev, former chief of staff of the Russian airborne troops, committed suicide Monday.

Belayev "shot himself with his own pistol in the early hours of Monday," Interfax quoted a spokesman for the airborne troops assaying.

Law enforcement sources said suicide is viewed at the main theory behind Belayev's death.

The sources cited Belayev's wife as saying that prior to the suicide, Belayev told his wife there was "no reason for me to live", for "all my friends are dead".

Belayev's close friend Col. Gen. Yevgeny Podkolzin, a former airborne troops commander, died 40 days ago, the sources said.

Belayev, 60, served as chief of staff of the airborne troops staff in 1991-98.
