Tibetan Prefecture in NW China Celebrates 50 Anniversary of Founding

The Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province celebrated on Monday the 50th anniversary of its founding in its capital, Xihai Town.

The Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province celebrated on Monday the 50th anniversary of its founding in its capital, Xihai Town.

The prefecture was founded in December 1953 and has 27 ethnic groups including Tibetan, Mongolian, Hui and Han. The population of minority groups accounts for 61.34 percent of its total.

According to local officials, the prefecture's economy developed rapidly in the past five decades, and it now has industries of coal, asbestos, non-ferrous metals, herding products processing and electricity.

The income of local people has increased dramatically, with farmers' and herdsmen's per capita income reaching 1,581 yuan (190US dollars) last year, or 1250 percent more than 1971.

Urban dwellers' per capita income reached 5,280 yuan (636 US dollars), an average eight percent increase in the past few years.
