Sino-German Chip Joint Venture to Make Debut

German chipmaker Infineon said Monday that it would set up a joint venture in China to assemble and test memory chips and invest US$1 billion in the project over the next 10 years.

German chipmaker Infineon said Monday that it would set up a joint venture in China to assemble and test memory chips and invest US$1 billion in the project over the next 10 years.

The joint venture with the China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park Venture Co involves building a plant outside Shanghai, which will have a maximum capacity of 1 billion chips a year and employ 1,000 people, Infineon said.

The new plant is to start producing chips in 2005. Infineon holds 72.5 per cent in the joint venture, while the Chinese company holds 27.5 per cent.
