Imports of cars through Dalian Portin Liaoning Province, northeast China, surged by 130 percent year on year during the first half of this year to 19,320 units.

The total value of the imported cars, mostly medium- to top grade vehicles from Japan and Germany, stood at 480 million US dollars, or up 150 percent.

Auto imports from Japan stood at 9,025 units, about 46.7 percent of the total, ranking first in the imported automotive vehicles by country.

Auto imports from Germany grew by 800 percent to a total of 7,998 units, mostly assembled using parts imported from Germany for Audi A4 and Golf A4, worth 150 million US dollars.

Despite the rapid increase in imports due to lower tariffs, sluggish sales resulted in growing stockpiles.

A manager with International Automobile City in the Dalian Bonded Zone, which accounts for about 95 percent of the automobiletrade through the port, said they sold 8,500 units during the first six months of this year, down by 20 percent, leaving 7,000 units in stock, up 40 percent.

Rises in prices of imported cars and competition of cheaper andlocally-made cars were the major factors for the slump in sales, said the manager of the country's second biggest automobile trader.
