University Park Underway in S China Region

Construction began Tuesday on the first university park in southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Construction began Tuesday on the first university park in southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The park in port city of Beihai is being built at a cost of 10 billion yuan (about 1.2 billion US dollars), which has mainly comefrom non-state investors.

Prestigious Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and the Sino-French Association for the Development and Exchange of Education will be among the first occupants of the new park.

Zhang Zhengyu, president of the China Educational Investment Management Group, said the park would be a "platform" of educational innovation combined with new industries and human resources.

"The park will promote the economic development of the Beibu Gulf area, which plays an essential role in China's western development and the construction of the Sino-Asean Free-trade Area," he noted.

The park, due to be completed in April 2004, will enroll its first 1,500 students in autumn next year.
