Arroyo Promises no Whitewash in Probe of Mutiny

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo promised Wednesday that there will be no whitewash or cover-up during the investigation of the weekend mutiny.

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo promised Wednesday that there will be no whitewash or cover-up during the investigation of the weekend mutiny.

"I would really want to know how and why idealistic and intelligent young officers are inveigled to join these plots by self-serving politicians," Arroyo was quoted as saying in a presidential palace statement.

"Either there is something wrong about how we educate our soldiers or there is something wrong with the way we manage our military or some unscrupulous politicians have superb persuasive skills -- or all of the above," she added.

She reiterated that "I want to see a clear picture of how a conspiracy like this ripens into armed action. I expect the commission to give me that picture."

Arroyo said all evidence will be delivered to the probe commission and she urged people with information concerning the allegations of the mutineers to come forward.

"We will get to the root of these matters and proceed against those found culpable, and undertake the necessary reforms if warranted, there will be no whitewash or cover-up," she said.

Arroyo on Tuesday appointed Florentino Feliciano, a retired Supreme Court justice, to head a commission that would investigate Sunday's mutiny staged by some 300 military officers and soldiers at the Makati business district in Manila to demand the resignation of Arroyo and other government and military officials.
