Commentary Stresses Need for Peace Mechanism in Africa

The establishment of a peace and security mechanism in Africa is imperative if the war-torn continent is to avoid being marginalized, China's leading newspaper, the People's Daily, said Wednesday.

The establishment of a peace and security mechanism in Africa is imperative if the war-torn continent is to avoid being marginalized, China's leading newspaper, the People's Daily, said Wednesday.

The international community is deeply concerned at the dramatic deterioration of the situation in Liberia, the daily said in a signed article. "Endless wars in Africa have become a main obstacle to its development."

Fighting between Liberian government troops and rebels, which erupted in June, has claimed more than 1,000 lives and displaced about 300,000 people.

The United Nations has, for several times, called for immediate steps to create a peacekeeping mission in Liberia, but the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the major coordinator in the area, failed Monday to set a date for the deployment of a peacekeeping force in the country.

Wars and conflicts have become major obstacles to the development of the African continent, and with the fast pace of globalization, Africa faces increasing risks of marginalization, the paper warned.

It is imperative to establish an effective peace and security mechanism in Africa to ensure peace and development in the continent.
