UN Electoral Experts to Visit Baghdad

A team of United Nations experts will start a two-week visit to Baghdad this weekend to help the Iraqis with their preparations for a future election, a UN spokesman said Friday.

A team of United Nations experts will start a two-week visit to Baghdad this weekend to help the Iraqis with their preparations for a future election, a UN spokesman said Friday.

The team will discuss with their relevant counterparts from theIraqi Governing Council and the occupying authority the various possible modalities for electoral registration and the electoral process, and options for UN electoral support in those areas, FredEckhard told reporters.

The team from the UN electoral assistance division was dispatched as promised by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in his recent report to the Security Council.

In the report, Annan called on the United States to put an early end to its military occupation of Iraq and put forward a clear timetable on the establishment of a new Iraqi government.

The Iraqi Governing Council, set up on July 13, has pledged to begin a constitutional process and then hold general elections. Ithas appealed for UN assistance in this process.
