Xi'an, a city in northwest China famous for its historic relics, will spend 1.18 billion yuan (142 million US dollars) to create 25 new artificial lakes covering 1,200 hectares, in an environmental improvement scheme.

Dams will be built on the two rivers running through the city to form 20 small lakes covering a total area of 667 hectares, which will become public parks. Workers are using rubber barriers to catch water from the two rivers, and have already formed one lake of 40 hectares.

The other five lakes covering 533 hectares will be formed out of another two rivers in the suburbs.
