Port City in E. China Increases Cargo Handling Capacity

Port city Lianyungang in east China's Jiangsu province handled more than 20.2 million tons of cargo in the first half of this year, up 21 percent year-on-year.

Port city Lianyungang in east China's Jiangsu province handled more than 20.2 million tons of cargo in the first half of this year, up 21 percent year-on-year.

The port handled 138,000 standard containers, up 4 percent on the same period of last year.

The port has pooled funds from various channels to boost its turnover handling capacity and tried hard to improve and expand its shipping channels and berths.

In the first half of this year, a total of 173 large vessels with tonnage exceeding 50,000 tons have passed through its 70,000-ton-class shipping channel.

Upgrading projects have been conducted on 14 berths with tonnages ranging from 20,000 tons to 100,000 tons. To date, some 11 berths have been upgraded to berth ships with tonnages of 50,000 tons.

The port handles 120 scheduled liners per month bound for the United States, Southeast Asian nations and Japan.
