The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson arrived in
Hong Kong
Wednesday to make a port call.
Rear Admiral Evan M. Chanik, commander of the USS Carl Vinson Battle Group, said in a press briefing held on the carrier that Hong Kong has always been a favorite port to visit for the US navyand he is confident that Hong Kong now is a safe place to visit after the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government had successfully curbed severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
However, he declined to confirm the earlier report of a six-daystay of his carrier in Hong Kong, saying "six days" is a good guess.
The carrier came to Hong Kong in a battle group including a missile cruiser, a guided missile destroyer, a frigate and a support ship. The group has about 6,400 crew members.
This is the first port call by a US aircraft carrier since HongKong was removed from the list of SARS affected areas by the WorldHealth Organization in late June.
Carl Vinson's last port call to Hong Kong was made in November 1998.
