The United Nations Security Council on Friday strongly condemned the murder of a UN police officer last Sunday in the northern part of the Serbian province of Kosovo.

Members of the 15-nation council appealed to the NATO-led international peacekeeping force in Kosovo to "identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice," Council President MikhailWehbe said in a statement he read out to the press.

Wehbe said council members expressed their condolences to the family of the slain Indian policeman, Major Satish Menon, and to the government of India.

Council members reaffirmed the joint efforts of the international community to build a better future for Kosovo and they underlined the UN police force and Kosovo's police service have a vital role in contributing to guarantee security and the rule of law, he noted.

They urged all concerned to fully cooperate with the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), which has administered Kosovo since June 1999, he added.

Currently, the UNMIK has a police component of a bit more than 4,000. Menon became the first UN policeman to die in the line of duty in Kosovo when he was ambushed late Sunday on a motorway in northern Kosovo.

The NATO-led peacekeeping force and the UN police have stepped up their search for suspects in northern Kosovo, while the UNMIK has offered a reward of 50,000 euros (56,800 US dollars) for any information leading to the arrest of the culprits.
