Sri Lanka PM to Seek Strong Economic Ties with China

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is due to leave for a five-day official visit to China early Saturday, said that the main purpose for his China tour is to seek strong economic ties with China.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is due to leave for a five-day official visit to China early Saturday, said that the main purpose for his China tour is to seek strong economic ties with China.

In an exclusive interview with Xinhua before his departure for China, Wickremesinghe said that the culture links between Sri Lanka and China dated back thousands of years and bilateral relations have grown steadily in the past decades since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1950s.

"The world has changed and the whole economic pattern has also changed. We want to build new economic ties with China." he said.

Wickremesinghe said he is looking forward to meeting with new Chinese leaders and discuss with them political issues as well as issues to common interests.

He said that he will set up contact with Chinese enterprises both from public and private sectors and explore ways of cooperation in the fields of tourism, culture and religion betweenthe two countries during his visit.

He said that Sri Lanka's One China policy is unchanged and China is a good friend of Sri Lanka.

He expressed his thanks to the Chinese government for its help to Sri Lanka at the most difficult times of the country.

Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernanado, other ranking officials as well as leading businessmen will accompany Wickremesinghe on his visit.
