One person was confirmed dead, and another 10 people were missing after a massive landslide Saturday morning in a village in southwest China's Sichuan Province, a local official said on Saturday.

A provincial official said the landslide was triggered by storms that hit Xiazhuang Village in Wenchuan County in the past consecutive days.

Officials with a provincial disaster relief group headed by Tang Jianjun, vice-secretary-general of Sichuan provincial government, said 60 families in the village were affected, and five houses were destroyed.

The landslide also destroyed nearly five ha of farmland, three kilometers of power transmission line, and a 50-meter section of National Highway 317.

An official with the Civil Affairs Bureau of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan said the disaster took place at 7:30 a.m. in a mountainous area with poor telecommunications.

The provincial government dispatched task force to the disasterarea to coordinate rescue operations.
