Tibet to Invest 3.5 Billion Yuan in Transportation

Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region plans to invest 3.5 billion yuan (422 million US dollars) in highway improvement this year, according to the regional transport department.

Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region plans to invest 3.5 billion yuan (422 million US dollars) in highway improvement this year, according to the regional transport department.

The projects included renovating the highway linking Lhasa, theregional capital, with the Gonggar Airport, and the highway from Tibet to the Nepalese border, as well as opening roads in farm andpasture areas, said Liu Chengzhi, a senior official with the department.

So far, 13 rural transport projects have been finished, totaling 474 kilometers of highway at a cost of 450 million yuan (54 million US dollars).

By the end of 2002, Tibet had 39,800 kilometers of highway, andcar-friendly roads extended to 90 percent of the townships and 66.7 percent of villages.
