'S.W.A.T.' Captures North American Box Office

Samuel Jackson's "S.W.A.T.," a cop thriller based on a TV series of the 1970s revolving around the exploits of the Special Weapons and Tactics arm of the Los Angeles Police Department, arrested the top spot of North Americanbox office over the weekend.

According to studio estimates released Sunday, the Sony Pictureaction film, also starring Colin Farrell, enjoyed one of the best TV-to-movie openings in recent film history, taking in 37 million US dollars for the three day weekend.

In the movie, Jackson portrays a veteran special weapons and tactics leader, who trains a new police team. The SWAT team's mission is to prevent the escape of a crime kingpin, who has offered a 100 million dollar reward to anyone able to spring him from custody.

"Freaky Friday," another movie with 1970s roots, a remake of the mother-daughter comedy, also had a strong showing, garnering 22 million dollars over the weekend to take the second spot at thebox office.

Last week's box office champion, "American Wedding," the third film of the "American Pie" comedy series, fell heavily to the third place with estimated ticket sales of only 15 million dollars,down 54 percent from the first week. The film stars Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan as sweethearts whose marriage festivities are ruined by the antics of Stifler, played by Seann William Scott.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," a swashbuckling adventure starring Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, dropped to the fourth place, adding 13 million dollars to its total ticket sales of nearly 233 million dollars.

The much-talked-about Oscar contender "Seabiscuit," a horse racing drama, rounded out the top five, bringing in almost 12 million dollars and trotting to a 69 million dollar box office so far in just three weeks.
