China, Sri Lanka To Set Up Study Group To Strengthen Economic Cooperation

China and Sri Lanka have decided to set up a study group to identify areas in which economic cooperation could be further developed, said the visiting SriLankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Tuesday at a press conference.

He said the group would take into account not only the uniquenational circumstances of each country but also the valuable experiences of other countries which were expanding their bilateral relations in diverse fields.

Officials of the two countries would meet as soon as possible to consider the aims, principles and procedures that could be developed by the Study Group for promoting China-Sri Lanka relations, he said.

Wickremesinghe said China and Sri Lanka agreed to consult and coordinate closely to respond to the challenges inherent in thecurrent international situation and to safeguard the legitimateinterests of developing countries.

The two sides agreed further on the need to promote closerunderstanding and cooperation within the Asian Region.He and Chinese Premier Wen Jiaobao expressed great satisfactionabout the consistent, close and long-standing political and economic relationship that the two countries enjoy.

They identified new areas of interaction and agreed to intensify cooperation in matters of mutual interest including political, economic and commercial, cultural and educational interest, said the Prime Minister.
