Berlusconi, Schroeder to Meet in Verona

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will meet with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in the northern Italian city of Verona on August 23, a Municipal official of Verona confirmed on Tuesday.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will meet with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in the northern Italian city of Verona on August 23, a Municipal official of Verona confirmed on Tuesday.

This will be the first time that the Italian and German leaders meet since Schroeder decided last month to cancel his planned summer holiday in Pesaro, because of a dispute between Italy and German.

The dispute began with a verbal clash in the EuropeanParliament between Berlusconi and German Euro MP Martin Schulzduring the presentation of Italy's program for its six-month European Union Presidency on July 2.

Schulz criticised Berlusconi for his many conflicts of interest and the prime minister replied by likening him to a Nazi concentration camp guard.

This was followed by derogatory remarks about German touristsin Italy made by Stefano Stefani, a Northern League undersecretary at the Production Activities Ministry who held the portfolio fortourism. Stefani later resigned because of these remarks.

Schroeder decided to cancel his holiday because of the uproarthe two incidents caused in the German press.The German chancellor will go to Verona on August 22 where hehas been invited by European Commission President Romano Prodi toattend a performance of Bizet's opera Carmen in the Roman arenathere.

Berlusconi has also been invited to attend the opera and willremain in Verona the following morning to meet with Schroeder.
