Old Chinese Shipyard to Make Way for 2010 Shanghai World Expo Site

A Shanghai shipyard with more than 130 years of history is being moved to make way for 2010 Shanghai World Expo, said the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Tuesday.

A Shanghai shipyard with more than 130 years of history is being moved to make way for 2010 Shanghai World Expo, said the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Tuesday.

Shanghai city has decided to rebuild the Huangpu River frontagewhere the Jiangnan Shipyard is now located now into a modern business and residential area for the expo.

The city will build a new shipyard at Changxing island near themouth of the Yangtze River as a new home for Jiangnan Shipyard.

Jiangnan Shipyard was established in 1865, first named Jiangnan Machine Manufacture.

It was renamed Jiangnan Shipbuilding Works in 1929 and Jiangnan Shipyard in 1949.

In 1996, the yard was transformed to become solely state-owned Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Company Limited.

As the first generation of industry workers in China was nurtured in Jiangnan Shipyard, the yard is regarded as the cradle of China's national industry.

CSSC general manager Chen Xiaojin said another old shipyard, the Shanghai Shipyard, will also move from the Huangpu River front to the new shipyard on Chongming island.

Chen said that after the removal of these old shipyards, the shipbuilding industry base in Shanghai will transfer from the Huangpu River to the Yangtze River, and Shanghai's shipbuilding capacity will be greatly improved.

Statistics show that Shanghai has produced nearly half of all national shipbuilding orders, with an annual capacity of over three million tons, and its shipbuilding orders have accounted for4.6 percent of the global total.
