There's Need to Change over to New Ways: Int'l Notes

The present situation in Iraq is really chaotic, and there are frequent homicidal incidents. The US army seems to be fighting an endless war. Perhaps the Americans themselves have never expected such a nightmare-like reality. Many US officers and soldiers stationed in Iraq are eager to go home, they would rather pay all money for a home-going plane ticket. No wonder the world opinion has often raised questions: why have the attacking incidents happened everywhere? Why can't the situation be kept stable in such a long time after the large-scale Iraq war was over? Many analysts in the Middle East also feel puzzled: why is the present situation in Iraq so similar to that in postwar Afghanistan?

Present affairs in Iraq are really troublesome. Although many kinds of persons are working in the Governing Council concocted by the United States, the final say resides in the Americans. Even America's allies in the Middle East don't acknowledge the superiority of the United States and oppugn the legality of the Council. Meanwhile, UN's participation in the rebuilding of postwar Iraq has not been decided, and the international peacekeeping forces, ready to go to Iraq, are hesitating and have not been organized yet, whom the US soldiers, bogged down in the mire of guerrilla war, are longing to see. So, the US troops have to pose themselves as heroes, even though nearly 200 soldiers have died in Iraq. The Pentagon has recently announced that the US army will be stationed in Iraq for at least two more years.

Both past and present hegemonic behaviors are always similar, which lose morality while stress is laid on military forces. But the invaders can never win the public feelings. In terms of the crux of the Iraq issue, the Iraqi people, instead of having the feeling of enjoying a "new life and liberation", have suffered more from turbulence, poverty and illness, living in destitution. On the other hand, after overthrowing the Saddam regime, the American and British coalition forces have not brought tranquillity to Iraq, nor calming down the Iraqis' anti-US sentiment.

Another undue mistake made by the occupying authorities is that they forget the "human rights" which is always on their lips. They issued a rigor law to take over weapons in order to reduce the casualties of American soldiers in Iraq. During this time, American soldiers ransack Iraqi families with military dogs everywhere, and with the "handling matters according to circumstances" authorized by the US Department of Defense, cases of indiscriminate firing and injuring people by US troops in Iraq have been on the increase.. Of course, theoretically speaking, there would be no peace without management, but their behaviors indeed go against their wishes.

So, the US and UK authorities must change their course at an early date if they want to shake off their predicament in Iraq. But if they insist on going their own way, perhaps more trouble and danger will await them.
