Investigators said Sunday the blowout of a water pipe caused Saturday's cave-in accident in the subbasement of Renhe Century Square in Harbin City in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

Three people had been confirmed dead and eight injured in the accident as of 5:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the local government.

Rescuers are still trying to find the five people trapped in the ruins.

The accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Saturday as builders were working in the subbasement. Just minutes before, an earthquake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, hit neighboring Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to the west of the province.

Residents in Harbin suspected the impact of the earthquake might be attributed to the accident.

Right after the accident, the local government sent rescue workers to the site, and currently 150 people are working around the clock.

All other construction projects in the province were suspended pending a thorough security check.
