S.Korean High-speed Train Schedule Set

The South korean high-speed express train that will begin running April 1 will run 88 times from Seoul every day - 66 on the Gyeongsang line and 22 on the Jeolla line, and 92 times on weekends and holidays. Trains will depart every 15-20 minutes on the Gyeongbu line and every 40 minutes on the Honam line.

The government originally had planned to designate Seoul Station and Yongsan Station respectively as the departure stations for the Gyeongbu Line and Honam Line, but will operate both stations for both lines to make them more convenient for passengers. Final plans regarding the operations of the high-speed railroad will be settled at the end of this month.

With the opening of the express train, it will be relatively easy to travel overland from Seoul to anywhere in South Korea in a day. This is expected to effect revolutionary changes in society and the economy, having an impact on everyday life in areas such as housing, education, commuting, leisure, tourism, regional development and real estate.

The Korea National Railroad has extended the test operation term for the Seoul-Daejeon stretch, and will begin overall test operations between the entire length of Seoul to Busan. Commercial test operations with real passengers will begin in January for the entire stretches, Seoul to Busan and Seoul to Mokpo.

At a rate of 300 kilometers per hour, it will take three hours and 10 minutes from Gwanghwamun in Seoul to Jungang-dong in Busan. Compared to air travel, which takes three hours, it is only a 10-minute difference. Also, when the second stretch of the Gyeongbu Line is completed, the railroad will be 30 minutes faster than the airplane.

However, the operation of the high-speed express train will cause a 25 percent decrease in existing long-distance railroad operations. So passengers with destinations in Gimcheon or Gumi - places where the high-speed express train does not stop - may find the changes to their detriment.
