Annan Says UN to Continue Work in Iraq

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Wednesday in Stockholm that the United Nations would continue its work in Iraq despite the bombing of the UN offices in Iraq.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Wednesday in Stockholm that the United Nations would continue its work in Iraq despite the bombing of the UN offices in Iraq.

"We will persevere. We will continue. It is essential work," Annan told a news conference in Stockholm, where he stopped briefly before heading to New York. "We will not be intimidated."

Annan said that he would meet with the UN Security Council later in the day "to make a very comprehensive assessment of our present security arrangements and what needs to be done. "

A cement truck packed with explosives crashed into the UN headquarters in Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least 17 people and wounding more than 100 others.

The UN Security Council condemned the bombing as a "terrorist, criminal attack", while Annan called for the "perpetrators of this outrage" to be brought to justice.
