Tibet University Offers Large Monetary Rewards to Draw Talent

The prestigious University of Tibet is promising generous subsidies to scholars and experts in the hope of attracting new talent to work at the university, according to a source with the university on Friday.

The university is the famed leading institution of higher learning in the underdeveloped autonomous region, said Fang Lingmin, vice-president of the university.

"The University of Tibet is in urgent need of talent. We worked out a series of preferential policies aiming at drawing talented people to work here," the vice president said.

The university offers differing bonuses, up to 100,000 yuan (12,000 US dollars) each for graduates with a doctorate, 40,000 yuan (4,800 US dollars) each for those with a masters degree.

University faculty members leading scientific research programs and winning state prizes will be given handsome rewards, or 200,000 yuan (24,000 US dollars) for first state prize winner, 150,000yuan (18,000 US dollars) for second prize and 100,000 yuan (12,000US dollars) for third prize.

In addition, the university has pledged to give preferential treatment for holidays, housing and work facilities to those people who agreed to work in Tibet.

Fang acknowledged that the university was in great need of competent teachers, with numerous faculties hinging on the support of colleges and universities outside Tibet. Each year, about 20 percent of the teachers leave their posts for training programs, Fang said.
